SENTENCES IMPOSED

DUNEDIN, This Day
In tho Supreme" Court today Raymond Theodore Padman (23) was sentenced to three years' hard labour for setting fire to Wimpenny's petrol station. The Crown Prosecutor drew attention to tho perverse wickedness shown, when, after entering the place and stealing a miserable 12s 6d, the. accused was prepared to put tho owner and insurers to the heavy loss involved if the attempt to set fire to the place, had succeeded. "When all is said, it yet remains that you struck tho deceased to the ground with such force that his skull was fractured," stated his Honour Mr. Justice Kennedy in sentencing Arthur John Thomas Wilkinson (28) to two years' reformative detention on a
charge of manslaughter arising froman incident in Battray Stre~t ou June 3 in which Peter Smith was struck, dying shortly afterwards. IJobert James Linkston (47), for fraudulent failure to account for £114 to tho New Zealand. Tung Oil Corporation, was sentenced to one year's reformative detention.
William John Jardine (21), on seven charges, including robbery under arms at Balclutha and breaking and entering, received sentences concurrent which in effect mean five years' reformative detention. He held up a cashier in a store for £19, and amongst his exploits was the commission of three crimes on one night of, entering bedrooms and removing money while the occupants were asleep.

Prisoners appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court, today before the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers).1
Leonard Lawrence Do Malmanelie, of Tinui, Mastcrton, for forgery, was ordered to corao up for sentence if called on in two years. Restitution of £27 is to be made.
■ Bertie Stanley Pilchcr, aged 19 years, of Feilding, for forgery, and Victor Colin Hirst, aged 19, also of Fcilding, for forgery and uttering, wore each admitted to probation for twelve, months.
Albert Edward Standen, of Pahiatua, for making a false document for insertion in the Marriage Register, was admitted to probation for twelve months.
