NOTES AND COMMENTS

Local cyclists received another setback la.-t Saturday, steady rain, falling throughout the afternoon, and affecting the size of the fields*. The Poneke Club's 22-mile time trial was altered to one circuit .of the Kilbiruie couise, a distance of 11 miles. In spite of the elViuge, the event was quite a. strenuous amir, a bitterly cold southerly slowing th^ 'riders' times considerably. l

F. Blackett demonstrated that lie will be in iine trim for the approaching important events. He took both the handicap and time honours. J. Nettloton, who won a lO'/a-mile race a few weeks back, finished second. The consistent F. Lasky and K. Xankivclljinade second and third fastest times, besides adding several valuable points for the club's points trophies. The club held an enjoyable social in the evening, a good crowd being present in spite of the adverse weather.

At the Hutt, a 15-mile event was conducted by the Port Nicholson Club, and in this also the participants received a thorough drenching. The contest resulted in B. King registering his initial win the season from his co-markers, J, Wilson and C. Stevenson.

0. Disley took time honours from E. Poulton, who made best time for the two previous events. Poulton misjudged the actual finishing mark. Tommy Roe, who has not been riding since the first event of the season, made-third fastest time. This Saturday on the Hutt Valley course the second event of the McVilly Shield series will be staged. All cyclists in Wellington have to register with the Wellington Centre, N.Z.A.A. and C.A., riot later than July 29. Cyclists would be well advised to give this, matter their attention, as after that date no rider unless -registered will be eligible to compete in events under the centre's jurisdiction. Local clubs are badly in need of active officials. Those who officiate week after week have overmuch to do. With the approaching l'almerston North-Wellington event, it is to be hoped that the shortage will be remedied, as in last year's race matters did not run as smoothly as could be desired. C. Ericsson, for business reasons, will not be competing frequently. Ericcson has numerous splendid performances to bis credit, but has not quite maintained the form of 1029 when he took the provincial championship, although he was runner-up The Wellington Cycling Centre lias commenced an effort to raise funds for the expenses and trophy' list for the annual Palmeraton North-Wellington event. Previously cyclists have not co-operated .as much as they should, and in these hard times, each club member should endeavour to do his shave. For previous events, city firms have donated trophies, but the Wellington Centre realises that in times of depression people cannot give so generously as in the past. In a 30-mile event held in Chnstqhurch last Saturday, G. E. Giles registered best time, while in Auckland, for the gnfth occasion this season, L. Dwight won similar honours in a 20-mile event. '•Two new riders linked up with the Por, Nicholson. Club last week, and one, a brother of K. Wilson, gained second place. K. Dutton. from the Hutt Valley Club, is an unlucky rider in that fourth place seems* to be his lot.
