NURSING SERVICE

There was considerable discussion at the meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday afternoon, when Mr. E. N. Campbell moved: "That a district nurse be appointed for Lower Hutt in addition to the district nurse in Petone." Mr. CanVpbell said he did not think the Health Department had given the matter the consideration it deserved. Last year the district nurse at Petone.made 1700 visits —an average of about, five. visits a day. The population of Petone was 11,000, whereas the population of Lower Hutt was about 15,000. The district nurse was popular in Petone, and was giving verygood service. The local residents contributed towards the cost of the service. The speaker was of opinion that it would be a" mistake to combine the two districts under one nurse. Mrs. McVicar moved that the matter be referred to the General Purposes Committee for inquiry and report. Mr. Campbell remarked that the recommendation had come from the Health Department. Dr. T. L. Parr said there was considerable uncertainty as to the position and therefore as to the wisest course to adopt. It would perhaps be well to allow Petone to carry on as at present. After further discussion the question was referred to the General Purposes Committee for inquiry and report.-
