LOWER HUTT SITTING
The annual hold-up of motor drivers to ascertain whether they had licences tc drive took place at the end of last month in Lower Hutt, the result being that a large number appeared at the Lower Hutt ■Court yesterday morning, before Messrs. W.-N. Ocmpscy and M. ,|. Hodgins, J.P.s, and were charged w^tli failing to produce their licences when called upon to do so. In eases where licences were held but not produced drivers were given the opportunity of producing them at the Lower Hutt ti-aflic office within 24 hours. "Where this opportunity was neglected offenders were treated as if they had no licence.
Mr. N. T. Oi'llespie, who appeared for the Borough Council, said 'it was evident that motorists did not appreciate the necessity for having licences. The nouholding of a licence voided the comprehensive insurance policy, and possibly . the third-party risk also. For failing to produce licences the following were fined 10s and costs:—A. R. V. Boyd, H. Harris, A. Wilson, P. A. M. C. Reeves, Charles Jackson, E. Sullivan,- Dr. H. A. H. Gilmer, James Gilliard, John Feavor, A. A. E. Adams, G. M. Jonkinson, F. M. Anderson, H. Lowe, It. P. Butland, Ivor Te Puni, L. T. Jones, Dr. Hardwick Smith, K. 11. Goddard, A. J, BarrBrown, C. D. V. Grant, S. C. Weston. C. B. Robinson, ,S. G. Bland, E. A. Moßurney, A. J. Stedman, W. J. Turner, 11. Love, X., Geange, C. Simms, J. .Jackson, James Clulow, Chris. Spellacy, G. Sunderlaud, E. Newton, George Blackwood, F. J. Bobbins, HI D. Ell, Chong Lee, A. H. Campbell, A. H. Burns, D. Dawson, and P. Cording. A. D. Wright was fined £1 owing to his attitude to the inspector. Fines of 5s each were imposed on C. Ross, M. Mazssola, J. D. O'Loughlin, R. A. Hogan, and A. L. Gee. The following were ordered to pay costs only:—Thomas Kidd, H. J. Price, William Jones, H. E. Foothead, G. Everett, W. A. Sutherland, and Mrs. E. Campbell. T. AY. Hills was convicted and discharged.
Charged with exceeding the speed limit in motor-vehicles, fines of ]0s 'each were inflicted on J. C. Bidwill, E. Simm, and N. Hazelwood. Failure to give the signal when about to turn a corner in a motorcar cost E. yon Schilling 10s.
Riding bicycles on the bitumen where cycle tracks were provided was responsible for convictions being recorded against I. Johnson and I. Fisher.
The following penalties were inflicted for riding cycles without lights:—H. C, Piper, It. Cox, E. C. Ward law, L. C. Morrison, G. Johnstone, and M. Orr, each 10s; F. Heyos, 12s fid; D. Potter and D. H. McDowell, 5s each; F. C. Lusty, costs only; aad A. Scotson, W. Hodges, and George Scott, convicted and discharged. C. Ross, was fined 10s for failing to install a motor-crossing. •' L. Shaw was ordered to pay costs only for failing to register a dog. The dog in the possession of the defendant had been registered in the Hutt County, though the defendant resided in the borough.
