PHARACRE'S STEWARDS' CUP
United Ptcss Association—By Electric TelograpU—Copyright. (Received July 26, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 25. On the first day of, tho Goodwood Summer Meeting the following was tho result of tho
STEWARDS' CUP, a handicap swoopstakes with 1000 soys added; second 100 soys, third 50 soys; six furlongs. Captain Arnold S. Wills's eh h Pharacre, by Pharos —Sweet Acre, by Orby, 4yrs 1 H. J. Bructon's eh g Old Eiley, by Old Kowley—Pearl Oyster, 4yrs 2 Mrs. C. L. Mackean's br h Solenoid, by Soldennis —Shannon Jug, 4yrs 3 Twenty-six started. Won by a head, three-quarters of a length between, second and third;
Though probably not the big surprise that Solenoid's win was last year, the success of Pharacre in this yeir's Stewards' Cup, the sprint of chief importance in the English racing calendar, w.ould not have been generally anticipated, and it is likely that he went out at substantial odds. The nominations totalled 47, against 52 last year, so the final field of 26 (compared with 20 last year) was really of excellent dimensions. '
/ Pharacre, a chestnut horse' who was bred by his owner (Captain Arnold S. AVills) and is trained at Newmarket by F. S. Butters, appears to have won only twice previously (unless ho, was successful during the last month). He made an auspicious Turf debut by winning the Sorrel Plate'(s furlongs) at Hurst Park as a two-year-old, and he ran second to Orwell (then known as the Golden Hair colt) iii the Chesham Stakes (5 furlongs) at Ascot at his next start. In one other appearance that term ho ran last in the Hurst Park Great TYO Stakes (6 furlongs), won by Old Eiley. Last season ho was a failure, with one third only in seven starts.
He began racing early this season, and his first three appearances resulted in thirds in the Cliieveley Handicap (5 furlongs) at Newbury on March 31, in the Great Surrey Handicap (5 furlongs) a? Epsom on April 20, and in the, Bath Spring Handicap (5 furlongs) at Bath on May 16. At liia next start he won the Beaufort Handicap Plato (5 furlongs) at Manchester on June 8, beating two very fast throe-year-olds, Sarony and Cargan. Ho did not run at the Ascot. Meeting immediately after the Manchester. His rcco-rd shows him to be very speedy, but previously five furlongs was far enough for him.—"Eangatira." . >
