NAVY LEAGUE
ANNUAL MEETING
The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) presided over the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy League last night. More than a hundred people were present, and there were several apologies for absence. The annual report was read by the president (Mr. J. T. Grose). It dealt with activities in the schools in the Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson, Marlborough, and Kangitikei districts. The secretary had visited sixty schools, and addressed, mainly on inter-Empire trade, about 6000 scholars and teachers. Trafalgar Day was celebrated by visits to as many schools as possible, by a broadcast speech by the secretary in which the Palmer Prize essay competition winners were announced, and by the sending of a wreath, in ice, to the Nelson Column in London. Mention was made of tho increased interest of the Home Office in Navy League officers, and there was a possibility of a visit, before long, by an envoy to Australia and New Zealand. A reminder was also given that Captain Tapprell JJorling, better known as "Taffrail," the popular naval writer, and one of the Navy League's official lecturers in England, would be in New Zealand from December until the middle of February. He would be available to the league's branches for lecturing purposes.- Thanks were expressed to all those who had helped the league during the year. The statement of assets and liabilities at December 31, 1932, showed surplus of assets over liabilities amounting to £526 11s 7d, which included £100 specially marked for the Palmer Prizes. Since the balance-sheet was made up the league had received a share from an art union amounting to £333 6s Bd. On tlie motion of Mr. Grose the report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was stated in Taivmnga last week that pukeko and grey duck are already nesting. A local resident found several nests in a swamp at Bethlehem, close to Tauranga, containing one to five eggs. He states that it is unusual for water fowl to lay so early.
