RECENT APPOINTMENTS

COMMANDER J. W. FARQUHAR

(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, June 9.

Commander J. W. Farquhar, 8.N., who has been appointed to .'H.M.S. Diornede, and is leaving by tho Bangitane on June.. 29, is the son of Admiral Sir -Arthur Farquhar, of Acheron, Aboyno, Aberdecnshirc, and grandson of Sir' Malcolm McNeill, of Edinburgh. Members of the \McNeill family settled in Ne^v.Zealand in 1870."

Commander Farquhar joined the Eoyal Navy in 1910, and was', on tho training cruiser Cumberland on the outbreak of tho war. He served in H.M.S. Benbow^the flagship of Admiral Doveton Sturdco in the Battle of Jutland. During the remainder of tho war period Commander Farquhar was in destroyers. From 1919 to 1921 he was with the Australian Navy, and served both on the Australia and the Melbourne.

From 1923 onward he held several anti-submarine appointments. In: 1927 he was flotilla leader, and from 1930 to 1932 he was fleet anti-submarine officer on H.M.S. Nelson. Ho was promoted commander in 1932.

Commander Farquhar.is a keen fisherman, and shooting, hunting, and cricket are among the other sports he has indulged in. His previous 'acquaintance with New, Zealand was.one days-golfing at. Auckland when he was passing from Australia to England. He is unmarried.

NEW MEDICAL OFFICER.

\ Surgeon: Commander J. W. Tighe, the newly-appointed squadron medical officer, saw service during the world war. A portion of this period was spent in the mystery or "Q" ships. From 1921----23 he .was on H.M.S. Espiegle,' on the Persian Gulf-East Indies Sta-tion. For the next year his ship was H.M.S. Campbell, fith Destroyer Flotilla,. Home Fleet. Following came a year's service at the Eoyal Naval Hospital, South Queonsfcrry, and from 1920-2S ho was in Australia and China in H.M.S. Herald. Oh returning to England in tho latter year ho "was posted to H.M. Dockyard, Shecrncss, and from 1930 to dato he was at H.M. Dockyard, Bermuda. Surgeon-Commander Tighe, with other officers appointed, will leave by the Rangitano on June 2D.' Unfortunately, owing to ill-health, Mrs. Tighc will not be able to go out- with her husband, but it'is hoped that she will bo able to join him in Now Zealandabout tho end> of the year. Mrs. Tighe will be accompanied by her seven-year-old daughter.

Lieutenr.nt (E.) C. E. Havergal is the son of the Eov. C. Havergal, and was born at Brent Eleigh. Eectlory, Suffolk, 2G years ago. He was educated at Bedford School and at Woymoutli College. From tho college he entered tho service at tho ago of 17^ by the public schools' entry, subsequently taking a year's training in H.M.S. Thunderer. Then lie went to tho E.N. Engineering College of Keyham for four years' training. From Keyham he wns appointed to H.M.S. Revenge, tho vice-admiral's flagship of H.M. Mediterranean Fleet. For two years ho was in the Eevenge serving as sub-lieutenant and lieutenant (E.), being senior in the ship in the latter rank on departure. This appointment was directly prior to his selection to the" New Zealand Division. Lieutenant Havergal is a keen fisherman who has'had considerable experience in tho Wye for salmon, and on the Kenit, and at Riagdon for Trout.

The appointment is today gazetted of Lieutenant M. A. C. H. Hardcastie, lent to tho New Zealand Division for three years (June 15).
