AMERICA TODAY

.NEW ZEALANDER'S VIEWS

Interesting comment on. present-day life in America was made by Dr. Ernest Beaglehole, who returned to Wellington yesterday after spending five years in America and England. For three years Dr. Beaglehole was a student atiL.onaon University, where He obtained a doctorship in philosophy. From there ho went to Yale. Dr. Beaglehole, who was formerly a .student at Victoria TJnivcrv sity College, is oil a month's visit to New Zealand with his wife. Kef erring to the shortage of moijiey, which is being experienced by all or the American universities, Dr. Boaglohole said that most of the money .had been spent in. buildings, with the result that they were now finding it a problem to balance their budgets. With tho attempt that was being mado to have only -one building for .under"raduatos at Yale- and other big Amorican universities, it was hoped to break down the largo importance which sport at present had in American university life. The American student, Dr. Beagleholo considered, was nioro'traincd in the field df facts than his English contemporary, but there was not the samo scope for individual initiative as there was in England. _'; Concerning the economic life xn America, Dr. Bcaglohole said that confitions wore very bad at present, but opesworo held that President Eoosevolt's Industrial Recovery Bill would assist greatly towards a recovery. Production had almost reached, the 1929 level, but unless wages went up to increase tho ,purchasing power improved conditions would not obtain. Unemployment insurance had helped things at Home, and in this respect Engiand w,as leading America. At present relief in America was dependent on private charity. ■:■:
