WELLINGTON'S NARROW WIN

The AVelli;igton-Hutt match, played at the Hutt Recreation - Ground, was a fairly good exhibition, despite the very unfavourable conditions. The ground was a sea of mud and the circle at the southern end was in a particularly heavy state. Numerous injuries handicapped' both teams, Wellington losing Eusbridgc early in the second half. There was little scope for combined work, but good individual work was seen on both sides. McLeod and Ross were a tower of strength to the Hutt team, with their effective hard hitting, but the forwards lacked finish. Wellington dominated the game in the first spell, and several 'good rushes by the forwards finally resulted in Burton scoring the only goal of the match. Ferguson penetrated the Hutt defence more than once but lost the ball in the quagmire. Hutt took the aggressive in .the second spell, but failed to get through, Falconer being outstanding for the defence; Wellington occasionally visited the Hutt circle, and Ferguson, after a brilliant solo effort, lost the ball in the mud when in a good position. Both goalkeepers were greatly assisted by the condition, of the circles. Hutt pressed vigorously during the last few minutes, but without success. The game was played in a very friendly spirit by both teams, and was admirably controlled by Mr. H. J. Smith, whose refereeing was a decided factor in the enjoyment of the match. On the afternoon's play, Wellington deserved their win.
