INTER-COLLEGE MATCH

WELLINGTON SUPERIOR

DEFEAT OF WAIRARAPA

(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.")

MASTERTON, This Day. Though it was played in a sea of mud, and sometimes in water, the Rugby match in which Wellington College met and defeated Wairarapa High School at the High School Ground on Friday, was a spirited encounter, well and keenly contested to the v call of time. The final score was 11 to nil against Wairarapa, and the visitors on the whole showed 'a decided superiority in team tactics and a very happy knack of seizing the moment of opportunity and making the most of it. Nevertheless, Wairarapa were by no means disgraced, and were perhaps a little unlucky ~on the day. For the greater part of the first spell, and for about threequarters of the second spell, the home team was attacking almost continuously, well inside enemy territory, and often within striking distance of the opposing line. On no single occasion, however, was the attack driven right home. Wellington College, on the other hand, though they did a lot of defending, attacked at times with brilliant effect.

Inevitably, in the conditions of ground and ball, the game amounted largely to tight packing and smothering by the. opposing packs, varied by occasional contests in line-kicking, in which O'Callaghan and other Wairarapa backs acquitted themselves particularly well. On the day, there was no question of accurate handling, and fielding was extremely difficult. The only score in the first spell was an unconverted try scored for Wellington College by M. Watt. When the seeond_ spell opened, the fate of the game seemed to be still in doubt, but with the spell about half gone the Wellington team broke through brilliantly from a point beyond half-way. ' A failure or two by Wairarapa backs gave the attackers an almost unimpeded passage. One Wairarapa back (Peterson) was left to stem the rush almost on the goal-line. He tackled his man rather high, but J. Wyber scored easily under the posts, and the ■ try was as easily converted. • Wairarapa battled hard to balance, but without avail. Shortly before the call of time Wellington again swept down in attack, and from a line-out in the corner C. Gottley dived over to make the final score. The kick failed. Mr. F. Dean was the referee.
