PETONE AND UPPER HUTT
Although conditions were bad for the match between Petone and Upper Hutt at Maidstone Park, a fast and exciting game \took place. There was very little to choose between the teams, but Petone s better tactics on the day decided the issue. From the kick-off, Petone at once went to the attack, and Caldwell slipped over for a good try. Upper Hutt were not long in equalising. From a scrum, Greenbank worked the blind side for Edwards to cut in nicely and score. There was no further score in a hard-fought first spell. The second half was played in steady rain, but the. play was full of incident. Greenbank attempted to set his backs going in Petone's twenty-five," but his pass was dropped, and Cleland went almost the lencth of the field with a great bit of footwork to score splendidly between the posts. Caldwell converted, and the same player afterwards kicked a penalty goal. Upper Hutt had the better of the rest of the spell. Edwards fielded a kick from Lambourne, and cutting in made a nice opening for Neighbours to make a great run and score in the corner. The game ended Petone 11, Upper Hutt 6.
