THE CHRISTCHURCH DRIVE

■ Four weeks after tho clothes drive undertaken. -on behalf of the Christchurch Business Men's Committee for the relief of distress, nothing remains of the 10,000 parcels collected, states tho "Press." Grave concern is expressed by tho honorary director of the depot, Mr. T. H. Cape-Williamson, •who stated that a most serious' position would arise if further supplies of clothing were not made available, or if money were not provided to buy necessities for tho unemployed who > daily clamoured for assistance. Stating the position as conservatively as possible, the staff at the depot, including' Mr. Cape-Williamson, declared that a crisis would be reached within a few days unless further supplies of clothing and men's' footwear, were received. . It is the opinion of' tho depot staff that the j public of Christehurch does not perhaps appreciate the seriousness of the position. The greatest problem was to find clothing for those in distress who were unable to appear outside their homos properly dressed, and who were certainly- not able to keep themselves warm. Money and not goods was the particular need of the relief depot at the moment. Although.the citizens of Christehurch were most generous 'when asked to provide all the spare clothing possible, even the 10,000 parcels provided had been totally insufficient to meet the (demands of the thousands of unemployed men and their families who looked to the depot for the very necessities of;life. ••■■••' ; '' ' '
