TAXPAYERS' TRIALS
(To the Editor.)
Si r> _l have' waited in vain for an abler J pen to do, justice to : your last Saturday's excellept article on the taxpayer's trials. The, headlines--"Red Tape Bonds," "Enmeshed Business," "Its Courage in Trials," "Confident; and Sound"—are, :in themselves, a story the, truth of which every business man knows to his cost. Such a wealth of detail is not often found in one column—apparently space being the writer's biggest' handicap—and 1 should like to record appreciation. For the politician there was much food for thought (sadly in need of-good nourishment); for the business man, a sharp reminder of the increasing volume of compulsorily unproductive work; and for the general public, a comprehensive glimpse behind the scenes too rarely afforded them., ..... • It is indeed pad to think that, in the midst of powerful organisations of industry, employers' federations, chambers of commerce, etc., your protest from the wilderness is allowed to remain solo, while a noisy farmer chorus achieves selfish successes with concerted numbers all along the line. In my humble opinion, Sir, "The Post" lacked only one detail—a remedy—which I assume was somewhat outside the scope of a writer obviously con« densing only facts. ' Then let the Government remove the drags, commencing with pegged exchange inflation, and, eased of what your writer so aptly termed "unnatural strictures. New Zealand commerce and industry will quickly gather speed back to normal. Not long since, their vote-catching slogan was 'uVlore business in (government, and less Government in business." Let them now riot'preach; but practice it, and the majority are convinced that the hackneyed "corner" so often recently "rounded at last" will vanish entirely with the cessation of Government interference in business practice.—l am, etc:, . :\
