South Africa has more automobile owners than income taxpayers.. Out of a whito population of 1,827,000 there arc only 82,369 income taxpayers, it is shown bore, while there are no fewer than 193,402 licensed motor vehicles in the country, of which 140,000. aro private automobiles. In the Orange Free State more than 20,000 people run motor-cars but there are only 4GOO taxpayers. In Williston,- a Capo village, nobody pays income tax; yet the 2100 people in the village-share the ownership of eight, trucks, six motor-cycles, and 82 motor-ears. In i 932 imports of motor-cars 'fell, to about one-third of ; tho total they reached in 1929—7600. as compared to 21,400, valued at £966,000 as compared with £3,669,000. Petrol consumption, however, showed no decrease. '
