OLD SAILING CUTTER
After Ij'ing idle' for many years, the cutter Comet is being recommissioned for an Auckland syndicate- by Mr.l L. C. .Coultiiard at Onelninga. A 30 horse-power Diesel engino is being installed in the craft, which will bo used for seine fishing in the Hauraki Gulf and on the cast coast, wilh a capacity of 200 baskets of fish. About, thirty years ago tho vessel was well known on tho Manukau Harbour, being one of Mr. C. Constance's ileef. Sho was biiilt in 1870 by Mr. Matthew Sims for Mr. William Shaldrick specially for navigating" the small tidal crocks of tho Manukau, and was used for transporting supplies and produce.
Over two thousand out-of-work British sailors were found ships last yr.'ir through the efforts of tin; British bailors' Society. Iv addition '1.",057 distressed seafarers, seamen's widows, <!<!- pendents, and-orphans wore assisted. In 1932 nearly one and a halt' million were paid by sailors to tho Society's homes and £28,325 beds were occupied. 10 is stated that one seamun out of every tln-co is unemployed.
