HOCKEY ON SKATES
Only one game was played this week in the local hockey-on-skates championship, when Royal Rollers proved much too strong for the youtliful Olympics and won by 7 goals to 3. Dexter was the outstanding player for the Olympics, and registered, a spectacular goal as a result of a good solo effort. The management committee- of tho championship met this week to deal with an appeal made by tho Tigers against a decision of the referee in their match against the Swifts. After hearing the evidence of soveral players from the respective teams tho committee announced that, according to the rules of tho National Kink Hockey Association, tho decision of the referee must stand.
The position of the teams is:—Swifts 9, Royal Rollers 6, Petoue 6, Tigers 5, Comets 3, Rovers 3, Olympic 2, Oriental 2, Diamonds nil. A visit is being mado by a representative team fromHawke's Bay on August 9 to meet a selected Wellington team. Tho ■ sole selector, Mr. C. Toller, has decided to hold A and B trials at an early, date with a view to selecting the local team.
Hockey on skates is gaining in popularity, as evidenced by the ciiti/ ot business firms in matches.
