"AS GOOD AS ENGLISH"

The conviction that New Zealand cheese was iv no way inferior to the English product, -H-aa .expressed by Mr. Dynes .Fulton, acting-chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board, at a conference of dairy .factory representatives held in New Plymouth on Wednesday (says the "Taranaki Herald")1.

Proof of his contention as to (iuality had been given at the recent Auckland Winter Show, said Mr. Fulton. To make a test, chese selected at random had been Kent out from England, the varieties comprising English cheddar. New Zealand coloured and white, South African, Australian, Canadian, and Scottish. The cheeses had been examined by experts, who had been asked to grade the exhibits according to their opinion of its quality. First place was divided between the English cheddar and New Zealand coloured cheese, next being the New Zealand white, then tho Scottish, Canadian, -Australian, and South African.

"I want to draw attention to the fact that the New Zealand cheese had been packed and sent to England, repacked, and rctnvned, and even then was on a level with the English cheese," said Mr. Fulton. "That shows us that a great deal more has been done at Home to boost our product. A decidedly interesting point is the fact that the price for cheese at Home when the exhibits were sent to New Zealand were as follows:—English, 113 a per cwt; Canadian, 77e; New Zealand, coloured 445; New Zealand, white 3Ss.

It was hoped, added Mr. Ftilton, that .the exhibits could be brought to the various centres as an object-lesson tor those interested in the industry. It would indicate that New Zealand cheese was not the bad quality we had been believing for a Jong time past. The producers were actually finding moro fault with the quality than the coiiHumeivt, and the continual "howl" over quality that echoed from one end of the Dominion to the other did a great deal more harm than probably any other* enu.fe.
