WOMAN SANDBAGGED

ASSAULT IN BEDROOM

SAVINGS STOLEN

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

i AUCKLAND, July 21,

A violent assault with what is believed to have been a sandbag was committed on a young woman, Mrs. N. .Knight, by an intruder whom she surprised in her bedroom this morning. Mrs. Knight suffered a painful wound on the top of the head, and was confined to her bed for the rest of the day.

The assault was committed when Mrs. Knight, who lives behind a shop kept by her brother-in;law, went to enter her bedroom. The. door was closed, and as she opened it and stepped into the room she was struck a violent blow by a man who was standing behind the door. Partly stunned, she fell to the floor, and saw the man scramble through a window. '

Mrs. Knight's screams attracted the attention of her brother-in-law. He hastened to her assistance, but by this time the man had disappeared. The intruder had evidently been searching the room when, Mrs. Knight entered, as the place was in disorder. A box containing about £5 in notes and silver, Mrs. Knight's savings, had been taken from a largo chest, the contents of which were strewn on the floor. Nothing else was missing.

Mrs. Knight said this evening that she had seen a strange man. near the back door yesterday aftei'noon. She had taken little notice, but early in tho evening she was alone in the kitchen with the door closed when she saw it being opened slowly. She balled her brother-in-law, but he saw nobody.

Tho police wore informed and detectives have commenced an investigation
