A brief, but quite decided, earthquake was felt by many people yester-' day in Wellington at 4.31 p.m. The preliminary tremors, according to the recording instruments at the Dominion Observatory, lasted for three seconds only and then there was a jolt and the- earthquake was over. The origin was probably at a spot in Cook Strait, some 15 to 20 miles to the west of Wellington. This is a spot from which originate many of Wellington's local shakes. Yesterday's shake was of force 4' on the Eossi-Forel scale, which de-notes-a : certain amount of vigour, although without any accompanying damage.
