WELLINGTON RACES

THE WINTER MEETING

FIRST DAY AT TRENTHAM

EXCELLENT LEATHER

(By "Rangatira.")

There was a ■welcome change in the weather yesterday, following Sunday's storm, and today broke ideally fine after an overnight frost for the opening day of the Wellington Bacing Club's Winter Meeting at'Trentham. The course had recovered much better than might have been expected after such heavy: Tain, and the going, though soft and somewhat holding, was by no means heavy. The attendance early promised to be excellent,1 and much interest was shown in the new barometer index registering dividends being paid on the win totalisator. The latest accommodation for the investing public was favourably commented on in all quarters, and it has. undoubtedly set a precedent that all clubs will shortly bo emulating. Eesults and running descriptions of the racing up till time of going to press were:— . • . MATAI HACK ; STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, of. 150 soys, second 30, and third 15 soys from the stake; , about two miles and a half. 3—4— W. J. Doyle's b g Thurina, by ■Tlmrnham.—Silverina, aged, 10.9 (E. Beale) 1 2—3— B. A^ MeMullian's b g Fine Acre,' by Acre—Elegant, aged, 9.9 (W. Bowden) 2 I—l—A.> H. .Southee's b g Tunbridge,- by Tonbridgc—Tatrina, aged, 9.9 (A. Thurina, making his first appearance since last winter, proved easily the best juniper in the Matai Hack Steeplechase, and he finally won, pulling up, by five lengths from the'better supported Fine Acre and Tunbridge. Gueress and Tunbridge made most of the early running from Fine Actb and Thurina, "but Gueress fell at the first boards iii the back the second time, and Fine Aci'e out-jumped Tunbridge at the big brush half a mile from home to take the lead. Then Thurina, -who had been jumping perfectly throughout-, moved up. past Tunbridge, and he jumped to the front a-t the last fence. After establishing a lead, of some lengths, be was not extended to run home an .easy victor; Tunbridge came again near the end and got to within half a. length 'of Fine Acre. Jen was a moderate fourth; with Kaokaoroa well beaten. Quinopal fell at the second .fence (sod wall). Time, omin 30sec. (Winner trained by Mrs. J. Campbell, Upper Biecartou.) The New Plymouth representative A\iyril, who recently won her. maiden- ' heat at Foxton, followed up the success with another end-to-end victory in the Woburn Hack Handicap. She drew, well . out, in ~tho lino, but : she jumped out with alacrity, and was soon clear. She came over on to the course proper ajiead of Pladie (who had drawn the remote outside), Errantry, Drum Fire, Eedtop, Gold Dress, and Colo'ssical, and, in the run home,' she and Pladie drew clear, the. filly holding oft1 her challenger comfortably by v a neck. * Fivo lengths away, Colossical, who was on the' rail all through, was third,' with Woodful Tunning ;on in fourth place. High Grader' gave a stylish exhibition of fast fencing, out in front all the way, to win the Vittoria Hack Hurdles comfortably by five lengths from Eamuna and Paleta, who had a hard' tussle for second money. High Grader jumped to the front at the first fence and,'once tho field settled, down, PaletS, Eamuna, Hounslow, and Vitaphone were his nearest attendants. In the back Eamuna ran ahead of Paleta for a space and Hounslow dropped back. It was clear a long way out ■which horse1 must win, for the -winner never looked a .possibility for a fall and can. stay. Eamuna beat Paleta for, second, place by a head and, five lengths away, was Vitaphone, with Joio de Val, Hounslow, and Sir Musk. Some of the jumping outside the first three was.very: bad. once he came through, in the straight, he simply left the others. The Tiger's colours wero the first to become .conspicuous, but Glcnvane, Royal Hunting, Playground, Beacon Fire, Normandy, and Slippery, were, all hajidy <iv the earjy stages. Crossing on to'the course proper The Tiger was showing the way to Boyal Hunting, Beacon Fire, Playground,' Glenvane, and Slippery, -with Merry Peel, who had begun slowly in the rail position, appearing on the outside. The favourite came through the leaders below the false rail, and he came on to- win very decisively by three lengths from Merry Peel, who finished fast to boat Ko"al Hunting out of second place by half a length. Tiger was only ahead away, and next to finish were Manawhenua, Glenvane, Slippery, Miladi, ■ and Cottesmore. Time, imin 14Jsec. ■ (Winner trained by H. E. He went to the lead at the sod wall, the last fence but ono of the first circuit, and ho remained in front the rest of the way. After High Pitch.had tried for a round to take the lead off him, Billy Boy and Luna Lux went up to him four fences from home, but he out-jumped them, both there and the- next fence. Luna' Lux was with him for the. second to. last fence, but again Omeo went away. Omeo landed over the last fence, which ho brushed, a couple of-lengths in front of-Luna.Lux, and-.he- held the latter, at bay to the end to win amidst a great ovation by six lengths. Luna Lux was easing up in second place, eight lengths in front of Makeup; .with Callamart, three lengths away, fourth, Billy Boy another five lengths back, then High Pitch and Copey, both handy.
