THE HON. J. BITCHENER

- (Speelal li the "Evenlno Post.") .* ' . NELSON, July 1. The Hon. J. Bitchener, Minister of Public Works and Acting-Minister of Education, arrived in Murchison from the West I Coast yesterday, afternoon. He received several deputations. . Concerning the Lewis I'ass Road, the Minister said it was being pushed along on the Canterbury side, but- he doubted if under the present conditions the work could be hastened as requested. If a road was to be made it was just as well to make a job of it. It was not much use making a track only 14ft wide, as suggested, but the representations would.be considered. The Minister travelled to Motueka during the afternoon, and in the evening was accorded a civic reception, at which Mr. X J. Holyoake, M.P., and tho Mayor (Mr. It J. York) spoke. Mr. Bitchener said that if he ctnilil do anything to enable the people on the land,to make a better living than in the past he would feel satislied. He hoped to have a looU ai"'!".d the district on the following day, and see the conditions under which thu people worked, and also tomething of the beauty of Motueka and .its surroundings. Mr; Bitehener came on to Nelson today and will spend the weekend here. He ,is thefirst"Minister of the Coalition Government to. visit the district. •
