PONEKE AND ORIENTAL
A good same, played at a smart pace, resulted when Poneke and Oriental met at the Prince of Wales Park. The deciding factor in the match was the Poneke backs; they were too fast for Oriental, and they had a greater share'of the ball from the scrums. However, the Oriental forwards were the equal of Poneke in the loose, and the defence of th Oriental rearguard was sound. Territorially, both sides had an equal share of the game. The teams were:— Poneke: Barrett; Edgar, Chesterman, Payne; Griffiths, E. Keal; Julian; Dickson, Crighton, jlclvor, Stone, McPhcrson, Blanche, Koss, S. Neal. Oriental: A. Ramsay; Baldwin, Burn, Fulford; Bavies, Eade; Syddalls; Fry, I.' liamsay, Biggar,'Diinshen, Henshaw, Mcllwraith, Collings, Shepherd. Oriental attacked from the start, but Poneke pressed them back. A .good run by Baldwin y..t Oriental on attack once more, bui »vhen Poneko swung downfield Griffiths made a good run before being tackled on the line. Julian then scored. After a spoil of general play Edgar "potted" a neat little goal. A "pot" by Griffiths narrowly missed the upright. A penally kick was awarded to Oriental, but Ramsay missed from an easy position. Payne made a long run, and, kicking past the full-back, beat his opponent in the race for the ball and scored. _ The halftime score was: Poneke 10, Oriental 0.
Oriental commenced the, second spell with a great attack, but could not score. At length Poneko broke away; and E. Neal scored after a long rush downfield. Poneke then kept up an attack as strong as Oriental's had been, but they could not gain any further points. Play then became more general. The backs had less of the ball than before, and the game resolved itself into a dour struggle between the forwards. At last Oriental met with success, a centre kick from the side line enabling Biggar to go over the line for a try. Both sides made strenuous attempts to score again, but without result, and the final score was: Poneke 13, Oriental 3. Mr. G. B. Heley was referee.
