KENNETT CUP RACE

The principal event of tho harrier world last Saturday was the Kennett Cup steeplechase contest at Riccarton, over a distance of three miles and a half. The race is open to any club in New Zealand, and entries were received not only from Christchurch clubs, but also from Dunedin and from one Wellington club, namely Scottish. The'winning team takes the Kennett Cup, and the first man home the Olliver Cup. > Barnes, of the Civil Service Club, Dunedin. was expected, after his running in the Edmond Cup race at Dunedin the previous week, to win comfortably. His club mate, L. McLachlan, however, proved too good on the day. The two men were practically to-' gether during the whole race, but Mo-. Lachlan was too fast ih the finishing sprint. MeLachlan had, in the Edmond Cup race, finished a close second to Barnes. Civil Service got the first three men home, and* A, D. Park, of the Baptist Club, Christchurch, was fourth. As expected, Scottish did very well for its team to finish in second place, but its comparatively young team was no match for the seasoned veterans from. Dunedin. Stevens, as expected, "turned the tables" on Woodley, his conqueror in the' McVilly Shield race. Points for the Kennett Cup are counted for the first four men in each team. It is interesting to note the placings:—Civil Service had first, second, third, and 13th, total 19; Scottish had sixth (Stevens),, ninth (Woodley), tenth (Buchanan), fourteenth (Tunbridge), total 39. Parkhouse, of Scottish, was fifteenth, and Violieh nineteenth. DORNE CUP -ACE. On Saturday, July 1, the first big inter-club race of the season, the Dome Cup race, will be held at the Hutt Park. The cup is the property of the Hutt Valley Club, who have arrangements Well in hand for the event. Harriers will be interested to learn that ;the celebrated "bog" will be cut out, and the course slightly altered in that vicinity, and that* the course, will be flagged at the Gracefield paddocks. The race should result in a victory for Scottish on. present form. Brooklyn's best team is probably not as fit yet as it might be. NOTES. , The membership of the Methodist Club has increased from 12 to 21, whieli is a good sigu. There has not been a very consistent attendance, however, on the part of .some members, although members generally are keen. The form of several members in the runs to date indicates that there is quite a sprinkling of talent in the club, and that the club should not be long in making a showing averaging that of other clubs. In the various runs-in, Alcorn, Alley, and Thorley, of the older members, have continually proved their superiority, and may be counted on ns the leading runners of the club. Of the no-vices, C. and J. Thomson have been to the fore, although in the latest runs, Bevan, Ingram, and Johnson have also been showing up well. The weekly run of the Masterton Harrier Club was contested over a distance of some six miles on Saturday, thirty-five runners taking part. This was the final club run before the interclub raice between Wanganui and Masterton. Masterton is sending a team of thirty runners to Wanganui to contest, the Benson trophy. J. W. Savidan scored his first victory of the season at Auckland last Saturday, leading home a good field of twenty-three runners in a two miles and , a half steeplechase. Running from scratch in his usual .effortless manner he went to the front a quarter of a mile from the tape, and eventually won easily. The race was a fine one to watch, and Savidan received a great ovation from a big crowd of spectators.
