SEARCH FOR TALENT

SELECTORS APPOINTED

/Instead of having a sole selector for each island, as was the case last year, tho New Zealand Rugby Union's management' committee has decided that two shall"do the selecting of each team for the North Island match this year. There will be ample time for the selectors to pursue their; search for talent, as the match is'iiot to be played until September 23. Selections this year should be a first, step towards the building up of the, New Zealand team to go to England. It is a pity in a way tkat, with no engagements for a New Zealand team this year, a series of trials was not arranged. ■■:, Several union, have been seeking special attractions in the way of big football, and trials could have been .used, to supply their needs. A system such as that adopted in the selection of the 1924 New 'Zealand team would have been ; of. considerable value, and _it would have created a great deal of interest. However, it is possible that the Now Zealand Union has this in mind for -next year, but then the opportunities of staging special .trials will be limited through the fact that a team is expected from Australia. - _ For the positions of North Island selectors there were seven nominees, a. follows:—F. E. Sutherland (Auckland), M. F. Nicholls (Wellington), F. Glasgow (Wellington, nominated* by King Country), J. Walter (Taranaki), L. Southcombe (Wanganui), E. McKenzie (Wairarapa), arid N. McKenzie (Hawke 's Bay, nominated by Bush Districts). There was little doubt about Mr. E.* McKenzie being reappointed, and he will have Mr. Sutherland to confer with him. There were eight nominees for the South Island positions:— E. Snow (Nelson), A. A. Adams (West Coast), A. G. Colvin (Buller), J. T. Burrows and P. Harvey (Canterbury), W. Pearson (Otago), and H. Strang and •L. Lopdcll (Southland). Messrs. Adams and Harvey were appointed. In some cases the candidates received more than one nomination. Mr.1 Glasgow was not available; and Mr. J. N. Millard was not nominated by Wellington for the reason that he, too, was not available.

"E. A. Brown gave a most impressive performance for Technical Old Boys, showing some of the dash that won him Wellington representative honours a few seasons back (states the "Wanganui Herald"). In the .1929 season Brown sustained a severe thigh injury playing for Wellington in the Ranfurly Shield match against Wairarapa, and this prevented him from giving of his best during the past two seasons." Brown played for University when in Wellington.
