; One of the. most, spectacular military drill displays ever staged, in Wellington was witnessed! by a large crowd in the Town Hall la_t evening, when ten teams, of ladies representing the various Government Departments took part in a marching contest for the championship of the Civil Service* The standard of \vork and the precision of the movements, aided by revolving footlights, produced a scene which will be long remembered by those fortunate to iwitness it. The ..general work of the teams was splendid. , , The torchlight . evolutions, carried out with red, whitfe, and blue torches, created i a very pleasing effect. The .final movement of the teams, in maching down the hall, was mos^fc inspiring. , .The teams Were inspected by the company commander of the "High Jinks Brigade," who waw escorted by a 1 detachment of the Young* -New Zealand League, headed by th_£r.small drum-major, Paul. Duncan, aged height years. Music for tbe entertainment was supplied by the Fort* Nicholson Band. The judges were Cc>lonol R. St. J, Beere, Cap: tain R. Sinel, itnd Captain P. G. Thompson. Messrs. E. Baigent, F./M. Griffeii, A. Smith, Joha-hnsen, and Watts acted as j marshals.
