TAX ON SPORT
"Wo hope- the' Commissioner is not sorting out Rugby Unions only in his search for further revenue," stated a letter received from the Canterbury Rugby Union at last night's meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union management committee in regard to a demand for payment of tax. Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of tho management committee, mentioned in this connection that he had approached the Minister of .Finance, who he understood was discussing the matter with the Minister of Taxes. In his letter the secretary of tho Canterbury Rugby Union notified that a request received from the Commissioner of Taxes for returns of income for the past three years had been complied with, and he added: "With regard to liability for payment of tax, my committee recommendsfthat as this matter is one which concerns all Rugby Unions in New Zealand, your union should take the matter up with the Minister of Finance with a view to obtaining an alteration to the law. . . . ' Wo are of opinion that some combined effort should be made by all sports bodies likely to be affected, and this, we think, could best be done in AVellington, whore the authorities and Ministers are close at hand."
