William Tew, motor mechanic, Auck* land, stated that Penney asked him to< accompany him to Waiiganui to see aj maw on urgent business. On the run1 through Peuriey said he was not going to see a man but to look for stolen! silver. Hesuggested that if thcy.fotiudi it they could put, it in the upholstery! of tho car. Witness detailed hov«j Penney searched on the roadside neap the Pukerimu Road without success, and! then went nearer to Wanganui an(Jf turned with the intention of proceed* ing to Auckland. On the way they y;erej overtaken by Detective Murray and! Detective Walsh. Witness stated thati when Penney was arrested he denied all1 knowledge' of an ignition key found in! tho taxi when it was recovered on' Brassey Road.' While the police weref searching for the silver Penney and! Tew came on tho scene, and the former! was arrested. The case is proceeding.
