DEATH OF THE RAIDER
The Raider, who was formerly raced with considerable success by his breeder, Mr. J. M. Durie, of Feilding, but. who was disposed, .of to a southern owner some years ago, was reproduced in the 'final event,- the Seadown Handicap, at: Washdyke on Saturday, but the race was to bo hia last, for he broke a leg while running with the leading division and was destroyed. . . The' Raider was rising ten years old, and lie had been off the racing scene for twelve months. 'A short while back he' was sold by public auction at a poor hack price, and his re-entry- into 'the racing arena came as a surprise. At his best he was' a really good sprinter, but he left his true form- behind when he went south. He, was excellently bred, < being by Warplane frojn the Advance mare Hu* pana, a h^lf-sist«r-' to Tamatete, Tukia, , and Freehold. Hu'pana was a good -. winner; herself duringHhe war years, and at the etucl, prior to foaling The Raider, she left Mies'Hupana, another :useful perfontter... '." '
