"Cake" Day on Friday. To. raise money for "running expenses" the committee organising the "Coster Ball" in July for the City Mission men's shelter will hold weokly "cuke" days at their headquarters,----308 Lambton Quay. This Friday the shop will bo run by Lady Roberts and Mrs. W. E. Herbert, and the following week by Mrs. Knox Gilmer. Seatouu League of Mothers. There was a good attendance at the' June meeting of the Seatoun Branch of the Leaguo of Mothers. The president (Mrs. Alex Smith) was in the chair. An address on the "sanctity of marriage" was given by the Rev. J. R. Blanchard. Dr. Gow, on behalf of the members, proposed a vote of thanks, this being carried by acclamation. Two charming songs by Mrs. J. Eamsey were greatly appreciated. French Club. The recent reunion of the Cerele Francais was well attended, and the programme, in charge of Mr. W. F. C. Balham, proved particularly enjoyable. "La Poudro aux yeux" (Labiehe) was successfully rendered, the following taking part: Mr. Balham (Ratinois), Professor Boyd Wilson (Malingeard), Mr! F. F. Miles (Robert), Mr. W. Mason (Frederic), Mr. McAloon (un tapissier), Mr. E. Finlayson (uu maitre d'hotel), Mine. E. Finlayson (Constance), Mme. E. Lash (Blanche), Miss C. Smythsou (Emmelinc), Mme. Dechanet Mclntosli • (Alexandrine), Mme. Logro. (Josephine), Miss F. Hunttngton (Sophie), Mr. Sellars (un chasseur en livree), Master John BoydWilson (un petit negre). The acting was exceptionally good and the costuming most successful. The conversation circle was direc.tcd by Mme. Bendall. Mi?s A. Maekay received the guests. The singing of "The Marseillaise" and light supper closed the proceedings. Concert for Kindergarten. An attractive programme has been arranged for .the concert tomorrow evening in the Trades Hall, Vivian Street, in aid of the Taranaki Street Free Kindergarten Mothers' Club. The recital will be given by "The Rendezvous Ramblers" and friends, and- has been arranged by Mrs. Cruttenden. Vocal jtems, sketches, and dances will be given by popular entertainers. Leisure Time Classes for Girls. "Use today's free time well, for tomorrow you may have a jot1" should bo the, motto of every girl and boy with enforced leisure on his or her hands just now. Afternoon classes for girls under IS years offer means of keeping fit,- becoming more efficient and skilled, and ways of using leisure happily and profitably. The classes, which aro being held under the auspices of tho Y.W.C.A., will be under expert guidance and free of foes, so that many girls should avail themselves of this opportunity. Classes in physical culture and handcrafts aro held on Thursday afternoons, and on Friday next a special nursery training course of eight weeks will commence at 2.30 p.m. This course will include talks by specialists in Kindergarten methods and childcare, illustrated by practical work. The secretary will be glad to interview any parents when further information regarding the classes will be given. Enrolments are being received this week. Cinema Masquerade Ball. Wonderful interest has b,een taken in the Cinema Masquerade Ball which has been organised by the theatres and film exchanges. Everyone has displayed utmost enthusiasm in preparing for the big scene at the Town Hall tomorrow night—a Hollywood studio where you will meet all the notable film stara (in characterisation), Greta Garbos, Joan Grawfords, Ronald Colmans, Ronald Youngs, Maurice Chevaliers, William Warrens, Slim Summervilles, and a host of other well-known names. The main feature of the night's frivolity will be the taking o£ a sound picture of tho glittering scene. This
will be directed and produced on exactly similar lines to an actual Hollywood feature. Special attention is being paid to tbo "shooting" of the grand parade in which all patrons will participate. Applications for tickets are coming from far and wide, and the [ maximum number of tickets available ,-will soon be exhausted. This wonderful cinema masquerade 'promises to be one of the most outstanding features of the social year. Carterton Plvuikct Sortoty. The annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society was held on Friday .afternoon, Mrs. J. Steel I (president) being in. the chair. The re- [ port on the year's work recorded a very successful period. Officers were elected as follows:—President, Mrs. W. J. C. Wells; vice-presidents, Mesdamcs W. 11. Booth, F. Court, F. E. Nicolson, N. G. Itayner, J. Udy, J. Stool, H. E. Jackson, Misses Moucrieff, and- M. Strang; committee, Mesdamcs C. 11. Barber, J. A. B. Lawrence, A. W. Bealc, V. Vile, W. J. Candy, M. King, and G. Brown; advisory board, Messrs. W. Howard Booth, A. 'C. Tucker, Rev. W. F. Stent, and Drs. R. N. Campbell and W. J. C. Wells; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mrs. 11. M. B. Trapp; auditor, Mr H. Mortcnseu. Dr. M. B. Tweed, of Herctaunga, was present and addressed the meeting. St. Johii's Nursing Guild. Tho nurses' report presented at the meeting of the St. John's Nursing Guild recently stated that 33 patients had been admitted, and 13 discharged during May. Two had becn^sent to hospital, 27 remaining on the register. A total of 162 visits had been paid to homes by tho sisters, and C6O patients had visited the surgery. There had been one death. There was a very good response to the appeal for coal and blankets.
