CITY CENSUS FIGURES
(From "The Post's" Representative.) ■ VANCOUVER., April 26. Toronto is the most British city in Canada, according to the origin of * population, as disclosed by the recent Census. This pronouncement may, with « some 'reason, bo' contested by the residents of Montreal, -where the Census classifies as only 22 per cent. British. This disregards the fact that, in Montreal, Canada's largest city, a majority of the people come of a race that has inhabited Canada for 428 years —since the arrival of the first Trench settlers in- 1605, fifteen years before the Pil- ■ grim Fathers arrived in the Mayflower. ; The people of Montreal are classified as French. Yet, if a French family had settled in England as long ago as Montreal families settled in Canada, and, if the descendants of such a faniily came to Canad.a, they would be classed as British. Here are the official figures:— ' British Ter cent. City. Population. Origin. British. A year ago Halwell House, in Plymouth, was a ruin. It had no roof; it had no tenant; it had no use in the world. The i unemployed men of Plymouth were offered this ruin. They took it gladly and they ' did not take one penny with it, but now have it in perfect condition.
