OPENING OF SECOND ROUND

OLD BOYS IN THRILLING ENCOUNTER

1 The second round of the local senior Rugby football championship competitions was commenced on Saturday afternoon, and, although the weather was bleak and showery with a strong southerly wind,'some keen and interesting play was witnessed. Exhilarating play was the order of the match at Athletic Park between Wellington College Old Boys and Petone, the run of events in the second spell creating much excitement. Old Boys were always in the lead, slender at times, and just as a win was being heralded, Pelone in their final onslaught gained the points to make the position all square. As a preliminary to this entertaining and exciting match,. St. Patrick's College Old Boys (promoted from the second division).-met Marist (one of the lowest teams in the first division), and there was naturally considerable interest in this event, the result of which went to show that there is a distinct difference between llie standard of play in the first division and that in the second. Marist won easily. Oriental, also promoted, put up quite a fair performance against Hutt at llm Hutt Recreation Ground, but there, too. the. difference was apparent. Ponekc were rather too good on the day for Athletic at Newtown Park, but Eastbourne found Wellington a tough proposition at Petone, and Wellington won the day by a better all-round performance. In the second division, in which four senior B teams made their first appearance, there were some surprises. Wellington College Old Boys still lead in the A division. They are now three points clear of Poneke and Hutt, though, with points carried forward, St. Patrick's College Old Boys and Oriental are also well up so far as points go. Johnsonville and University now hold the lead in the second division, but, with points carried forward, Ponekc and Onslow are coupled with them.
