JOHNSONVILLE'S CLOSE CALL

The promoted Petone senior B team put up a great showing against Johnsonville in their first match in the second division of the A grade, losing an exciting game by 10 points to 11. The match was played at Petone, and in the first spell the home team had the better of matters, loading by 7 points to 3 at the interval. In the second spell, however, Johnsonville were superior, and, after wiping off the deficiency, established an 11-7 lead. Petone scored again, but the conversion necessary to get in front was not secured, though a, second kick was allowed. Shortly before the finish Petone had a chance to increase their score with a penalty goal, but Caldwell's kick, from well out, hit the crossbar outside the post and bounced over. For Johnsonville Craig, Chick, and Turner scored tries, Turner converting one. Hudson and Trapp scored tries for Petone, and Spence kicked a field goal.
