FIRE STATION SITE

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—The revelations of the past few days show up a rather' shocking state; of affairs. The citizens have' been' misled over this alleged civic, centre scheme, and \from false premises the authorities, both council and Fire Board, have drifted entirely astray. If the civic.centre scheme had not been' endorsed as is now declared, how came the Chapman Commission to be set up and on what grounds? The. present Mayor, Mr. :T:' C. A; Hislop, apparently opposed the idjia when he was a councillor. Where does"1 he stand now? Would rhe agree to set up another Commission "of inquiry £6 trace the cause of this new bungle—and place the blame where it should lie? Mr. Hislop' certainly docs not appear to be qulpable.-el am, etc., JAMES McINTOSII. (To the Editor.) >,

Sir,,— lt is to be hoped that Councillor Duncan will carry his.proposal to retain the present-site for the Central -Fire Station. Why go to Oriental Bay to build another fire station when, the present one opposite the Town Hall, is suitably situ-' ated?. Front, the present main . depot a flyout to all angles can be accomplished and fires reached within Very short time. Starting from Oriental Bay would mean it'great difference iwitK fires' occurring in Thorndon or even Lambton Quay; But apart from the Question of suitable locality, ,we as ratepayers are looking at the cost tha£ is to be incurred.. Improvement of the present building, perhaps by another storey" being erected, would I be all that is needed to give better accommodation. *No doubt a lot of • improvements could be made at the rear of the fire__station opposite the Town Hall. Building another fire station a distance away should not be* considered.' We cannot get -our rates lowered if such spending ■is allowed.—l am, etc., ■ ■ . .' 1 LOWER OUR RATES.:
