liv spite- of ,tho' unpleasant weather condition? which developed last night and continued this morning, today's official woather forecast is optimistic about an improvement taking place shortly. Winds will be southerly, generally, it says, and strong on the east coast north of Kaikoura and in places in and north of Cook Strait. Winds otherwise will be light to moderate, and whore strong will gradually decrease in force.-Pass-ing* showers may be expected along the east coast northward from Kaikoura and iii. far .northern districts, but- a gradual improvement may be anticipated. Elsewhere tho weather should bo, fair to fine, but temperatures will be. cold. "' .'■/ ' •
The unpleasant break' in the- weather has been'due to an increase in intensity of both tho depressions located to the east of tho Dominion and .to the approach of another anticyclone.- These factors caused southerly winds to freshen during tho1 night and to reachgale force in.places.' Conditions became especially severe alo"ng the cast coast as far north as Cook Strait, and there was a general coW change with showers in most districts, although the. lain has been confined mostly to coastal areas.
Auckland had a dull and cold day yesterday .with a light south-westerly wind. The night was showery. <
After, a fine morning in Wellington tlio weather deteriorated. The wind changed to-thc south after midday, and tho weather became cold and dull. Rain foil in the late afternoon>and during tho cvoning and again after 5 a.m. today. Tho wind-early this morning was strong and squally, and some heavy hail showers fell between 8.30 a.m. and !) a.m. Tho rainfall for the twenty-four Jtours recorded at Kclbnrn amounted to 22 points, 15 falling in Lower Ilutt. Christchurch . had cold and dull weather yesterday with a south-west-erly breeze. After midnight the,wind increased. to gale force- and showery ■conditions developed, the total fall being five points of raiu. - A fresh south-westerly wind prevailed in Dunedin yesterday. The morning there was fine, but the afternoon was overcast. The wind became strong during the night; and sonic heavy vain fell.
