RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIPS

LOWER GRADE POINTS

SEASON WELL ADVANCED

I Tho Rugby football sejfeon for, 1933 1 so far as the Wellington Union's club 1 competitions arc concerned is now well t advanced and the issue in the lower grades is being narrowed dowu in most cases to two or throe teams. The even ness of tho grading, however, whuih has so far been evident in tho senior , grades, is still apparent from the junior grade down and one-sided totals of points for and against are more scarce than they usually have been in the I past.. .In few instances can- the ultimate winners be selected with any j degree of certainty at this stage. JUNIOR GRADE. Eastbourne-are'tho only undefeated j team ia the first division of the junior j grade and appear to be in ■ a strong position. Wellington have lost one match and drawn another and Petone have had two losses. In the second division Oriental and Johnsonville are both unbeaten, but Johnsonville have played a drawn game. Upper Hutt, with ono loss, are also well in the running. Tho Oriental team has been withdrawn from the first division and all the other teams credited with two points, . .

THIRD GRADE. Wellington College Old Boys have won all their games in tho first division of the third grade, as have University who, however, have played only three games as compared with seven by the leaders. Wellington.and Moera have oauh played five games of which one has been lost. Tho two St. Patrick's Colleges and Wellington Collego play in this- grade, but their matches do not count for the championship. In' tho second division Karori, with the maximum number of points, arc leading from Plimmerton and Poneko, who havo had a Iqss each. Poneke's record of points is exactly tho same as the leaders. Athletic have won all their games in the third- division where Eastbourne and Institute-have had one loss each. University, Poneke, and Sit. Patrick's College Old Boys (replacing Miramar, who withdrew) were late entries in this grade. Moera were recently transferred to tho first division, changing places with Taita. FIRST DIVISION.

FOURTH GRADE. .The loaders in tho first division of the fourth grade'at present arc Technical Old Boys, who were recently transferred from the second division with the points earned there. Of tho original teams Petone are unbeaten with one drawn game, and Melrose-Selwyn and Wellington Collego pld Boys have each had one loss. The St. Patrick's College Old Boys team has been withdrawn and entered in the third division of the third grade. In the second division Upper Hutt and Onslow are unbeaten, and played a draw when they met. They have played a game fewer than Seatoun, who have had ono loss. Athletic and Miramar were late entries in this grade.

FIFTH GRADE. In the fifth grade Petone have won all their matches, as also havo Onslow, who have played throe fewer games., whilst Wellington and Hutt havo each had only one loss. All of these teams have a big margin in their favour in regard to points, for and against.

i SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADES. ;By inflicting" on Petono their tirst ! defeat last Saturday, Hutt have taken : the lead in the sixth grade, with an mii broken run of wins. Both of these I teams are apparently much stronger i than the other teams in the grade. The : position in the seventh grade is very II open. Ilutt and Johnsonville have won ;'all their matches, and Wellington havo

only ono point less than tho maximum. Onslow B are a lato entry in this grade.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. In the club championship, which is a record of all the championship points scored in tho various grades, Petone are maintaining their, lead, and at present are four points ahead of Hutt. Wellington, three points behind, have also scored strongly, but the remaining clubs are well back. The points are:—Petone 85, Hutt 81, Wellington 78, Wellington College Old Boys- 54, Athletic 50, Johnsonville 43, Onslow 42, Oriental 41, Eastbourne 41, Miramar 41, University 37, Upper Hutt 35, Poneke 35, Melrose-Selwyn- 29, St. Patrick's Old Boys 29, Berhamporo 28, Marist 22, Seatoun 21, Kaiwarra 16, Karori 16, Moera 14, Institute 12, Porirua 12, Plimmerton-10, Taita 0.
