SURPRISE IN FIRST DIVISION
OTAGO RETAIN ENGLISH TROPHY
There was an upset in the Association first division championship on Saturday, and as a result Petone are entrenched in their position at the top of the championship table. Hospital, who hold second position, were defeated by Lower Hutt by the odd goal in three after a good struggle, and as a result the teams on the lower rungs have been able to move up towards the three leaders, two of whom held byes. In an interesting contest at the Basin Reserve, Waterside ran up a big score against Swifts, but the final totals do not reflect the manner in which the game was contested, the losers having made a good fiput. Marist gained a win over Technical College Old Boys, the victory coming from superior work by the forwards. In Australia the second Test match between the Commonwealth and the New Zealand touring team ended in a draw, each side scoring two goals. At Dunedin, Otago retained the English Association Trophy, Wellington's challenge being defeated once again.
