TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

There will be racing next week at Hastings (Thursday and' Saturday) and Wash''"^dventu^'is 5 due to make his appearance as a .teeplcchneet at Hastings next week His owner won the Napier Steeples with Disrank two-years ago, but the horse was severely injured in a tail on the second day of that meeting. Luna Lux, who has now won three steeplechases and one hurdles in the four times he lias contested jumping races, is due next to be seen in action, m the role in the June Steeplechase at Hastings next Thursday. Chopin has had a full season, but evidently it is not to be concluded yet, as he is engaged at the Hawke's Bay Meeting nexc week. There is an impression that he is no good on heavy "oing, but last winter he won the Wanganui Connolly Handicap on a heavy track, though admittedly he had little to beat. All hope, of getting another race out ot tho unsound rising nine-year-old Paleta has apparently not yet been abandoned, for he is being nominated for meetings in Hawke's Bay. Since he last won, at Napier Park just on five years ago, he has raced only four times, twice last season and twice this. At Waipukurau last Easter he ran second to Kaihoro in a three-horse field.

When business is dull in some lines in the commercial world a "clearing sale" is held, with a cut in prices in order to gather money. The .cut in prices on the final day at Wingatui last Saturday no doubt materially assisted in building up the gate returns, which were £100 more than on the corresponding day last year.

Royal Saxon slightly ricked himself when racing in the Wingatui Steeples. It is thought that he did so by slipping at the sod wall and ditch near the mile post. . , Tho hurdle horseman R. Beale has taken up temporary residonci? ai" Washdyke, and he will be associated with F. Trilford'K stable until after the Grand National Meeting. One of his tasks will be to school Semper I'aratus over hurdles.

According to a Riccarton report, Shatter has been put'into work ngain following a short spell. It is probable that he will undergo another preparation for the New Zealand Cup, for which he was favourite last year, but in which lie badly dis-; appointed. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference next month the Auckland Racing Club will move that the rule providing for the eight-stone minimum in flat races during the winter months be abolished. The minimum was reduced from Ost to Bst two years ago. Now it is proposed to have no obligatory winter minimum.

The Waikato Trotting Club has definitely decided to accept July 1 as the date for its extra meeting, and a programme of Heven races has been submitted to the Trotting Conference for approval. In order to give medium-class and improving horses an opportunity to race for useful prize-money, limits have been extended reasonably, and as the meeting follows closely upon the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting the entries are expected to be very satisfactory.
