TENNIS SINGLES

FINALS IN FRANCE

CRAWFORD BEATS COCHET

WIN FOR MISS SCRIVEN

United Pres3 Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Beceived June 6, 10 a.m.) PAEIS, June 5. In the singles final of the French lawn tennis championships, J. C. Crawford (Australia) defeated H. Cochet (France), 8-6, 6-1, 6-3. In. the women's singles final Miss M. Scriven (England) defeated Mme. B. Mathieu (France), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. When Crawford crushed Cochet France's domination of her own singles championship, which foreigners have unsuccessfully striven to win since it was opened to the world in 1924, was broken at last. Never before had the British Empire made such a clean, sweep in the French championships. Even the junior title went to a British competitor for the first time when V. JdcGrath (Australia)"was successful. Crawford met Cochet at his own game, both in taking a rising ball.and in his high-spirited style. Crawford won the first set by beautiful passing shots on the- backhand after both had given a wonderful exhibition of volleying. The crowd of"15j000 displayed the usual partisanship and booed a marvellous stop-volley by Crawford which fell stone-dead over the net, Cochet having no chance to reach the ball. The crowd objected so vociferously that Crawford obligingly threw the next point away. Thereafter the Australian was, remarkably brilliant, and out-manoeuvred Cochet on both sides of the racquet, and passed him at the net. Coehet was supreme only when the Australian lobbed. The Frenchman then scored ofi almost every high ball. Crawford's service was working perfectly, and he eventually ran out the winner by brilliant placements which confounded Cochet. Thus concluded one of the most satisfactory Australian performances in an overseas tournament for many years, four Australians sharing victories in the men's singles, the consolation singles, the junior singles, and the mixed doubles." Australia also disputed the men's doubles final. Miss M. Scriven became the first Englishwoman to win the French championship when she defeated Mme. Mathieu. In the junior championship final McGrath (Australia) defeated Destremeau (France), 6-4, 6-1. In the consolation final Turntrall (Australia)' defeated McGrath (Australia), 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
