AUSTRALIAN CONDUCTS

LONDON May 31. An. Australian violinist, Mr. George Deason, replaced the conductor, Mr. Richard Crean, at the Royal Command crazy variety performance at the Palladium. Mr. Crean had become ill, and had to undergo a blood transfusion operation. Mr. Deason was notified two days before that he was to conduct the performance, and he scarcely slept afterwards. He went through the programme next day on the piano, and for the first time rehearsed with the orchestra. Ho led the anthem as their Majesties entered their box amid vociferous cheers. The audience then joined in the anthem. ,
