A GOOD HOLIDAY
THE KING'S BIRTHDAY ROYAL S V ALUTE AT NOON Twenty-one guns, the Royal Salute, were fired from Point Jcrninghain at noon today in recognition of the sixtyeighth birthday of King George V. Apart from the salute, really tho only official celebration of the anniversary in Wellington was that the day was a public holiday. Although military parades were to take place in several | centres, there was no observance of that nature in Wellington. Citizens were invited by the Mayor to make use of bunting, but the only display of any extent was that on the Town Hall, at the General Post Office, and on several of the ships in port. Solitary flags were flown from Parliament House and the Government Buildings and also from a number of tho larger business houses in town. Although the air was rather chilly, the fine weather made it .possible to enjoy the holiday out of doors, and after the spell of wet weather, good use was made of this opportunity by many people. There were plenty of sports attractions—races at Otaki, Bugby and Association football matches, hockey, basketball, and golf tournaments, and the Wellington Miniature Eifle Club's meeting at the Winter Show Buildings, where also there was an Alsatian dog show. For those otherwise inclined there wero the picture theatres and the "Cinderella" pantomime at the Grand Opera House. Another event in the holiday programme was an aviation display at Rongotai by pilots of the Wellington Aero Club. Other people spent the holiday out of town, some motoring and others "hiking..!' The King's birthday really was celebrated in many different ways, according to the taste of the individual. Falling on a Saturday it also had this virtue: it gave people so inclined the opportunity of getting out of the city, for a restful two days.
