THE HARRIET WRECK
.-Niuety-nine years ag0,,.0n April '20, IS3-1, the whaling vessel Harriet, owned by Captain John Guard, was r driven aghoro at Onltura, Taranaki. Besides Captain Guard there w,ere o_n ;bp,ard Captain Hall, who comniiiucled the vessel, Mrs. Guard and her two children, and 28 men. All reached shore safely, and two of tho men -set off ia a single boat for Mbturoa,' to obtain assistance, states the "-Northern Advocate." The th.'u:d iday^a.fter the wreck a party of about 40 Natives from the To Namu pa plundered the vessel. On May ■ 7 tho plunderers 'wc-ro joined by another band of .about 20_0, who warned the shipwrecked party that they inteuded to kill them. On May 10 an attack was launched, and, with tho exception of Captain Guard and 11 men, the Europeans were overcome. Sirs. Guard, and her children were taken to tho pa. After representations had been made to the Governor of New South Wales the barque, Alligator was sent out to New Zealand, and Mrs. Guard and tho youngest child were rescued' after Evo .months'- captivity.
