MR. D. DE GROOT, MUSICIAN
(Heeeivcd May 24,1 p.m.) LONDON, May 23. Tho death has occurred of the wellknown violinist and orchestral leader, Mr.' D. de Groot. ; ' ' Mr. de Groot, a famous concert, violinist, was born in Amsterdam and was destined to be a baker, but won a scholarship at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and after five years there was to go to Borlin to finish his studies under Joachim. His father met with' nn accident, and the boy had to abandon his course to earn money. Ho entered the orchestra of the Amsterdam Opera House-and used also to play iv a dance band. Ho went to Belgium, taking; his family with him, and formed an orchestra to go to the Paris Exhibition of 1900. The venture was .a failure, and he took to playing in the Exhibition Grounds. From: thero his uncle went to London, where he obtained work; for the young player. In London he bocame' conductor of a small orchestra and later went to the Piccadilly Hdtel as leading violinist. He was .there for over twenty years, and after leaving it appeared in almost every city in England during yarious tours. ' •'
