IE ARO SCHOOL
HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETING NO COMMITTEE ELECTED Called for the purpose of electing a school committee, a meeting of householders of To Aro School last night decided that tho formation of a committee bo deferred until the Education Board, which had administered the affairs of tho school for the past twelve months, submits a balance-shoo': for that period at a meeting of householders to be held a fortnight hence. ... Mr. C. H. Nieholls, a member of the Education Board, presided, aud there were twolvo householders present. One householder, said that although ho had mado application to the board, ho had never seen the balance-sheet for the past twelve months. lie had been shown a statement, but it was not comprehensive' enough. Mr. L. Hennessey (chairman of the Parents' Association) aaid that, householders had a right to examine the balance-sheet. "Unless the board can show a satisfactory balance-sheet then I would not care to bo a member of the committee," he said. ■ The reduced capitation grant caused considerable discussion. Mr.,Nicholls quoted figures showing thai since 1931 the capitation grant to tho To Aro School had dropped from £224 to £194.' Obviously, the school was not getting sufficient capitation. It did not pay tho Education Board to keep its school committees hungry, but tho committee of Te Aro School must carry on on a reasonable capitation, and | ho thought that reasonable men and j women would be able, to come to some arrangement whereby they . conld conduct tho affairs of tho school satisfactorily. "The members of the Education Board aro quit© prepared to grant; material assistance to a school of this sort. if it can satisfy the secretary that it is paying the cleaner | a fair Avage," said Mr. Nicholls. ' J Mr. Heunesscy said that there was] not a school in New Zealand that received sufficient capitation to cover services'such as'cleaner's wages, fuel, i repairs, etc. It was pointed out by a householder that at one city school the children were asked to'bring threepence ajweek to pay for coal.
