Joseph: Tidal,_», wellknown business wan of Hawke's Bay. Born in Barcelona, Spain, in -1866, Mr. Vidal came to, New Zealand 22 yeais • later. With his uncle . (Mil Sole), of Wauganui, he went into -the; winemaking business. •Ho -.: subsequently; removed to ' Wellington," and after a. time established a business' in" Palinerston North, where he .remained for' * number -of years. C. J.McKenzie, who was recently; promoted: to the position of'Engineer-in-Chief. Mr. Wood is an authorised. surveyor, and Associate Member, of theInstitute of Civil Engineers. 'He entered' the Public Worlds Department; at Wellington, as an engineering cadet oii August! 2, 1900, and -a year later1 ho went to Central Otago, being engaged) on the railway construction works between Wedderburn and Clyde. He was engaged on that'undertaking till 1906^ , when he was sent to the Nelson district as acting resident engineer. Ho served as an assistant engineer on thai, construction of that section of the-North! Island Main < Trunk railway between' Raurimu and Horopito. In 1908 Mr., Wood . was appointed engineer : representing the Government on the- ; -Otiral tunnel contract.' From 1910' to 1912, ho** was engineer-in-chargc of tho-iWestpbrfc district, and from : 1912. v to.i;il92o ; . had1 charge, of the Wharigareiv-district ia North Auckland.
