United Presa Association—B7 Electric T«l«----graph—Copyright. (Received May-13, 1 p.m. ) WASHINGTON, May 12. Gaston B. Meatos, testifying in his own defence at his trial on a charge of attempting to defraud Mrs. Evelyn Walsh McLean of 35,000 dollars for use as a ransom in the 'Lindbergh case, said on Friday that the Lindbergh baby was stolen by New Jersey liquor runners. He said that Max Hassel and Max Greenberg wex-e responsible for the kidnapping. He did not know the two, but they had sold beer to servants at the Lindbergh house. He said that' Irving Fenton, described previously by him as one ~of those responsible for the kidnapping, had told hxm that Lindbergh as a practical joke,on occasions had placed the baby ■in a closet and told servants the baby had been- stolen. This joke, said Means, gave kidnappers an idea of how to take the baby1. One of the members of their ring did go !to tho Lindbergh house with beer, picked the baby from the crib, and went away. / Means testified that the infant body found in New Jersey and identified by Colonel Lindbergh, a year ago as his child was a "plant," according to the information, Means said, . which had been given him by one Wellington Henderson, whom ho had.identified previously as one of the kidnappers. Means said that Henderson visited him when he (Means) was out on bail, following his arrest in tho McLean ease,'and said that he and the real'Lindbergh baby were at Juarez. This was on May 17 of last year. Means said that Henderson told him the baby was still alive at that date. He further said that Henderson told him that the 'autopsy performed on the body of the baby found in New Jersey disclosed different measurements from that of the real Lindbergh child.
