GROWTH OF GOLF
VALUE OF RECOVERIES
NOTES
Each succeeding season sees more golf played in and around Wellington, tnd, the hard times notwithstanding, tihere seems to be little falling off inj the membe-inip of the clubi ri'hi3 ife the same in other centres, but it is prc*bable that there are more clubs, in a ,given 1 radius in Wellington than in any/ other New Zealand centre, and if the number of young players who take up t;hp game every year does not diminish the problem of new courses will ha\fe to be considered.: This season thfjire are several new clubs, some^ playing;' on new courses. All this is for the good of the game. The most satisfactory, feature of the position is that some of/the best golfers in the district have oidy a few seasons' play behind them. Uiider these conditions records may rcceii^e a .shattering in the next few yeare, particularly as tbe clubs are devc/ting some attention to the improvement of their courses. The New Zealand Giolf Council is fully alive to the importance of green research, realising that it i;^ there that most strokes are lost in rfche averago game. Strangely enough, / most attempts to obtain the best greens by sowing have proved unlucky. The course that may be recommended to young clubs, at any rate^l which have not the cash available for costly experiment, is to select a piece* of good turf which has thrived undc/r local conditions, and lay it, on a good foundation, for its greens. .Elimination of weeds such as dandelions and/ the coarser grasses, and plenty of 'tutting, will result in a green that •'frill reward the accurate and thoughtful putter. The tendency to instal I greens with "wobbly" surfaces, necessitating carefully judged borrows, pnakes the good surface the more imperative.
