FIRE FANCIES
(Original.) One spring evening Molly sat in her armchair, and gazed into the fire and saw all the wonderful pictures there. While she was dozing, one of the fire sprites jumped out of the fire on to tho carpet before her. "What is your name, little mortal?" she said. Molly looked up in amazement,'but before she had time to answer her, the fire sprite had taken her by the hand and was leading her down' one of tho fiery passages. They went through an arch with a big chandelier overhanging' it, and a glass door opened before them wltich led into a hall., All the time the fire sprite bad been chatting away to herself. They passed through the hall into a long passage with doors on either side, but all of them appeared to be shut. At last they came to a door which was slightly ajar. Outside this door the fairy stopped. "This is the Throne room," she said quietly. "Would you like to peep in and see our queen?" "Oh, yes, please," said Molly, very much excited. So they both stepped inside the door; but instead of seeing a beautiful fire fairy queen, they saw a number of fire sprites making an arch of fiery torches. After waiting a few minutes the tinkle of tiny bells was heard, and the queen did really come; but instead of going to, her place on the throne, she crossed the room to where Molly was standing and took her by the* arm. And th'en Molly's mother whispered, "Bed time, Moliy darling!" "MEG ALL-ALONE" (15). Lyall Bay.
