At the International Conference of Sugar Scientists recently held in Porto Eico, AVest Indies, one of the outstanding personalities was Dr. Gerharda Wil-
liriiik, of Java,, who, in addition to being the only woman delegate present, was also chairwoman of the section on sugar pathology (states ,an exchange). After nearly thirty years' service in Java as pathologist to the Java sugar industry and latterly as director of the Chcribon experiment station, Dr. Wilbrink has just retired to Holland, where she is engaged in writing a book on tho sugar-cane diseases of the world. A few years ago she was awarded tho gold modal ti the Java sugar syndicate. In recognition of her scientific knowledge and attainments, she had the degree of Doctor of Science conferred on her by the University of Utrecht, Holland. She speaks fluent Dutch, English, German, and French, in addition to the various Javanese languages.
