FALSE RELIEF VOUCHER
Sentence of three months' imprison* - ment was passed on John - Chariot Cannon, aged 28, by Mr. Justice Blaifl - in the Supremo Court this morning,. Cannon, who was timekeeper at relief works in Townseud Road, was foundl ' guilty during the week on « charge o$ . making a false voucher by embodying} in, it the name o£ a Telief worker whq had left the job, thereby committing ■ foTgery. "Mr. E. Webb, counsel for the. prisoner^ as id that Cannon was a married man* His wife and child were solely depends ent upon him, and at the Resent tim 4 his wife was in an indifcrent stataj of health. Apparently any punish* meat inflicted upon him would to H| certain extent be punishment against; his wife. Under the circumstances hq "- could only ask the Court to deal with! Cannon as leniently as the law woul^f - permit. Before passing sentence, his Honoufl said he had receive a communication! from a. relative of the prisoner asking that probation be extended. The difficulty, however, was that Cannon hai? already had that. The prisoner had! had a good chance, his case not being that of a man who had been brought^' up under unfavourable conditions. Hal had done a very mean thing, and half placed a number of people under sua*picion. His offence was a serious ond from the point of view of relief workers generally.
