SEAMAN ADMITS ASSAULT
At the Magistrate^ Court today, Walter Henry Tidy, a seaman, aged 38» pleaded guilty before Mr. E. Page, S.M., to a charge of assaulting Llewellyn Summerell; ■. ■ ' ■'. . . ' Sub-Inspector Martin said that the offence took,^ place at about 9.40 a.m. yesterday in Grey Street. Two constables saw the accused .strike Sutumerrell. When they went over, to intervene the accused'made off. When he was subsequently arrested he said that he had mistaken Summerell for another person who, earlier in, the day had called him a "scab." The accused, who had been on. relief work for the past two years, was described as a man with Communistic leanings and an agitator of the worst type. Summerell, said the Sub-Inspector, was not a free labourer. He was in Wellington on holiday. > . ■ . "Mr.-A. J. Mazengarb,'who appeared for the accused, said that Tidy was unfavourable to the present strike and had spoken against it. Yesterday ho came in to town for the purpose of receiving his unemployment pay and also to look'for work. When he was returning from the Union Company's offices he passed a group of men, and tho word "scab" was used. The accused said that he himself was struck on the side of the head and was under the impression that he was being attacked as a free labourer. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £3, and ordered the accused to pay the money. ,within three weeks. TRIAL fiY JURY. Having elected to be tried by a jury, Terence Walsh Flynn, a seaman, aged 23, was remanded until tomorrow on .a charge of being found armed with a bludgeon with felonious intent.
